STEELMEN IN MORE HOT WATER

Gareth Phillips, ineligible for the game at Porthmadog
[Mike Greenslade/www.mikezite.co.uk].
FOR the second time in a week, Port Talbot are in hot water for fielding an ineligible player.
The Steelmen have been fined £500 by the FAW Premier Cup board for playing midfielder Gareth Phillips in the 7-2 first round victory at Porthmadog, when he was suspended for picking-up two yellow cards in the competition in 2004. Cards in the Premier Cup do not apply to other domestic matches.
Phillips will now miss Tuesday's second round match at Carmarthen Town.
Port Talbot were fined £200 and deducted one point last week after naming two unregistered youth team players in their League Cup squad.
31 October 2007.

Surely if they played a player who was suspended for that game then they should be removed from the Cup.

If all you get is a £500 fine but get to keep your place in the comp then whats to stop say Rhyl playing Lee Hunt if he's suspended, winning through and pocketing £10,000 in prize money and then paying a the £500 fine out of that.

Seems a bit ridiculous to me

Yes, usually teams get ejected if they field ineligible players...

But should suspensions be carried over from 3 years ago?! And if the answer is yes, is the Premier Cup board making the clubs aware of the players who are subject to suspension?

Imagine if this fella had moved club, ho the heck will his new club know...?

Hmmm....

The Premier Cup board did not let teams know about suspensions but will now do so as a result of this. Sloppy admin from both sides.

Are we lucky to still be in? I'd say yes. Although I ain't complaining.
